Biography
Jeffrey B. Arthur (Ph.D., Cornell University ) is an Associate Professor of Management. Prior to joining the faculty at Virginia Tech in August 2000, Dr. Arthur was an Assistant Professor at Purdue University and Fairfield University . He has taught graduate and undergraduate classes in human resource management, labor relations, compensation, and management of technological change. Dr. Arthur’s published research focuses on changing labor-management relations and business strategies in the steel industry, productivity gainsharing and organizational learning, and the impact of systems of human resource management practices on firm performance. He has presented this research at numerous conferences and meetings including Academy of Management and Industrial Relations Research Association and has had articles published in Academy of Management Journal, Industrial and Labor Relations Review, Journal of Management, and Journal of Labor Research. His articles on strategic human resource management have been cited widely. He is a member of the Editorial Boards at Strategic Management Journal and Group and Organization Management. His current research interests include understanding the dynamics of how human resource management practices (e.g., Scanlon gainsharing plans) affect organizational learning and firm performance outcomes. Recent research projects include examining the effect of employee empowerment programs on organizational effectiveness in public school districts.
