Biography
Carroll U. Stephens (Ph.D., Duke University) is an Associate Professor Emeritus of Management. Before joining the Virginia Tech faculty, she taught in the Sociology Department at Duke. Her articles have been published in Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Review, Business Ethics Quarterly, Organization Science, and several scholarly books. Her research interests include critical theories of organization, economic sociology, value-rational organization forms, post-bureaucratic organization, the relation between economic organization and social-class stratification, and industrial democracy. Her teaching specialties are organization theory and business ethics. She has presented papers at annual meetings of the Academy of Management , the American Sociological Association, the International Association of Business and Society, the Society for Advancement of Socioeconomics, the Institute of Management (TIMS), and EGOS. She is special senior editor of Organization Science for critical/normative organization theory, a member of Administrative Science Quarterly's special editorial board for critical organization theory, and a reviewer for Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, Human Relations, Management Science, Business and Society, and Work and Occupations. Honors include a Pamplin College Teaching Excellence Award, a letter of commendation for undergraduate teaching excellence from Duke's president, and selection as a finalist in TIMS' contest for best dissertation in organization theory.
